I made my own birthday cake this year. Well really, I had about 5 birthday celebrations and just as many cakes, between friends, family, and various celebrations with various people. So when my mom and I had our joint birthday dinner celebration with my dad, I said I’d bring the cake. Because I wanted to try and make this one, courtesy of Martha Stewart herself:
(Eeek, falling candle!) It’s an inside-out German chocolate cake and was my first attempt at making a cake, ever (not including cakes from a box or cupcakes). And honestly, it was so much easier than I thought it would be. I made it on a Friday night while eating Thai food with friends, sipping on red wine, and getting ready to go out. I actually put the chocolate ganache on the cake at 2 a.m. when I got home from the bar. And I’m not gonna lie, it was pretty good. Deliciously fudgy with coconut-pecan filling; it was more like a brownie than a cake.
Here’s my version:
We couldn’t find tall candles so we just threw on some fake flowers my mom found in the closet. How Martha Stewart, right?

Nice work, ladies!
I especially love the header. And the title/tagline.
And that cake is making me hungry.
Your cake looks better than Martha’s
Looks delish! So excited for the new site!
Holy crap, I should’ve called you for my birthday. If I have a made up birthday on January 23 can I still be eligible for a cake like that?
That looks delicious! And I LOVE the new site! You guys rock. I can’t wait to see what else you come up with!
Why is this cake not sitting in front of me with a huge class of milk RIGHT NOW?!
It was fun watching you make it but I sooo wanted to try it. I hope you make it again soon!! and i agree, your cake does look better than Martha’s.
Oh that cake looks fabulous!
Glad to see the “boston girl” brand is expanding. Cupcakes and cocktail parties aren’t exactly my bag…but Boston is, so I’ll stay tuned. Good luck! Any chance at a celebrity guest appearance from She whom you exalt?
that looks great- LOVE the cake stand too!
Looks great! I’m looking forward to more from your site.
i read the recipe, please tell me that it is not as complicated as it sounds because I would love to try it!
Thanks everyone!
And Wasted Time: It’s REALLY not as hard as it looks. It was my first cake from scratch and it came out really well and was pretty simple. Don’t let the word “ganache” scare you!
