Spending Some Time in New York City!

Hello from New York City! I’m writing this on Monday afternoon (but posting it Tuesday morning since Chels just posted my bday party post!) Anyway, Chris had to come to the city on business and I figured I’d tag along for fun. Unfortunately, I couldn’t take any more time off from work, so I’m stuck working from the hotel while he’s at his conference… but nights in NYC are the best anyway!

I’ve flown, driven, and bus-ed it to New York City, but had never taken the train. We thought the train would be fun. It’s super convenient to get from Boston to NYC on Amtrak and it dropped us off in the perfect spot. And though the train doesn’t have wifi (why not?? How does the $30 bus have it and Amtrak doesn’t?) it was quite nice. Plus, I always enjoy a chance to get away from the computer and work and do some reading. Excuse our appearances; we got up at 5:45 to make our train after celebrating my birthday with friends the night before.

You know me, I obviously have a few cupcake spots on my list to hit up while we’re here. I’ve always wanted to go to Billy’s Bakery and yesterday I finally did!

The shop was absolutely adorable.

I got the Yellow Daisy Cupcake with Vanilla Buttercream Frosting and Red Velvet Cupcake With Cream Cheese Frosting. Both were amazing.

DSCN1645

Strangely, red velvet cupcakes usually aren’t my favorites, but this one melted in my mouth and tasted like heaven.

The frosting on the vanilla was perfectly sweet and while the cake part tasted too cornbread-y for me, they worked really well together and totally balanced each other out.

We spent a lot of time just wandering the city. It is Chris’s first time here, so he wants to see everything! Yesterday was an absolutely beautiful day in the 70s, so we got some iced coffee from Joe The Art of Coffee.

Which has apparently received a bunch of awards.

My iced latte with nutmeg was quite fabulous.

We continued our nice, super-long walk, checking out NYC’s many sites:

DSCN1660

I walked by Martha Stewart’s studio and reminisced about last year when Chels and I went to her show. I seriously got the chills seeing her billboard and sign. Love her way too much!

After walking around all day, we were starving and decided to go to Natsumi for dinner.

We ordered a bottle of the Hob Nob Shiraz

DSCN1675

And had the Oyster Martini for an appetizer.

DSCN1682

We also got a spicy tuna roll, yellowtail and jalepeno, and the Gold Leaf Roll with gold leaf, mango, spicy tuna, and salmon

The Gold Leaf was SO pretty. And delicious too!

DSCN1691

Everything was fabulous and gave us enough energy to walk about 5 more miles after dinner. Of course, we had to stop by the Apple Store.

We wandered around.

Even though he’s not in New York City, I had to get my photo with Jay Leno. He grew up in my hometown, went to my high school, and went to college where I attended grad school. Love him!

DSCN1716

Of course we walked through Times Square.

And we LOVED that this was in NYC’s Times Square:

And here’s a little sneak peek of what else I expect to be doing in the next 2 days:

OK, off to finish my work so I can get out and enjoy the rest of the day!

Hey! Billy’s bakery is SUPER yummy! I think that Buttercup at 53rd and 2nd is pretty spectacular as well.

Funny thing, though. The Martha Stewart Show films right across from my bf’s apt in Chelsea, and that ENORMOUS Martha looks right into his bedroom window! A little creepy, but mostly awesome. I love Martha!!

  • Glad you’re enjoying our little city! ;) My husband proposed with Cupcakes from Buttercup (the ones Megan mentioned). I would also recommend Babycakes, my personal fav.

  • I love seeing your shots from “walking around” and realizing I walked the very same streets a month ago! We ate brunch across the street from Billy’s one day, had Magnolia in the Village, saw the crazy man outline on that building in Chelsea! I love NYC- glad you got to tag along for Chris’s inaugural adventure!

  • Two must do things while you’re in the city:
    1. Go to Two Little Red Hens Bakery for cupcakes (www.twolittleredhens.com)
    2. Go to Dumbo in Brooklyn

  • I love this post! The beau and I are planning our first trip together to NYC for December and I can’t stop thinking about it. You gave me some ideas for other places to check out aside from the normal Times Square/Rockefeller Center/Central Park sites. I am a huge Sox fan so I love that picture of Papelbon in Times Square – especially since we were high school classmates, too!

Enjoy the rest of your trip!
