The Cupcakes of New York City

As you probably know, cupcakes are my thing. I love love love them and have for a very long time. Which is why I’m thrilled this “cupcake craze” hasn’t gone away and cupcakes are still everywhere. My sister designed a Chicago cupcake crawl for me back in the day. And then she made a Chicago Cupcake Part #2 for me and Chels when we visited Chicago last year. So, naturally, I had to make a lot of cupcake stops in NYC. I didn’t hit nearly as many as I wanted, but honestly, after your 4th stop, you start to question how much you really like cupcakes. And I never want to destroy my love for them! But if anything, NYC has strengthened my cupcake love.

As you saw before, my first stop was at Billy’s Bakery. Again, these were pretty and SO delicious!

Our next stop was Crumbs Bake Shop. Sara once brought me back mini Crumbs cupcakes from CT, so I had tasted them before and knew I loved them. I was excited to stop in one of the NYC shops!

Best in NYC? Hmmm. Does anyone agree with this?

DSCN1763

These cupcakes are seriously HUGE and beautiful looking.

DSCN1761

And there are way too many delicious-sounding flavors. It hurt my head to try to decide.

DSCN1762

I obviously had to get a S’mores one. I LOVE smores and a S’mores cupcake is like a dream come true. Also? It had marshmallow in the middle. Dying.

DSCN1834

And a Mint Chocolate Chip cupcake. Again, these cupcakes are huge, sugary, and delicious. Probably the most fun of all the cupcakes I had.

DSCN1838

Next stop was Magnolia Bakery! I’ve had Magnolia cupcakes tons of times, but I’ve never actually been in a shop. I was clearly excited.

DSCN1720

The pickings were a tad bit slim by the times we got there in the evening. But obviously they still had some delightful choices. I may have also gotten that shirt you see in the window.

DSCN1766

I LOVE Magnolia’s Vanilla/Vanilla cupcake, so I got one of their Pink Ribbon ones. Eating cupcakes to help cure breast cancer? That sounds good to me!

DSCN1767

It was delicious, as always. And maybe even just a little sweeter since it was for a cause.

DSCN1850

When I saw a Pumpkin cupcake, I, of course, I had to get one of those too. Deliciously moist with sweet cream cheese frosting; it was to die for!

DSCN1858

The next cupcakes were from a place called Burgers and Cupcakes. I didn’t actually go to the shop, but Chris was walking buy on his way home from his conference and grabbed some for me. I was a little skeptical of a cupcake shop called Burgers and Cupcakes, but these were some seriously good cupcakes.

DSCN1865

I don’t even know how to describe the Peanut Butter one I had. I’m still thinking about it, dreaming about it, craving it, etc. I’ve been talking about making a peanut butter cupcake for a long time now and this definitely pushed me over the edge. SO good!

DSCN1872

The Mint Chocolate cupcake was also quite delicious, though not really up to Crumb’s standards.

DSCN1881

And then comes Raspberry. I’m not really a fan of raspberry-flavored things usually. I love raspberries, just not the artificial flavoring. But this was really delicious. The frosting was incredibly light and the raspberry wasn’t overpowering.

DSCN1878

I thought I was done with cupcakes, but then after finishing up lunch at the Carnegie Deli, Chris spotted Fluffy’s.

And these in the window:

DSCN1903

OK, fine. One more. I had really low expectations since Fluffy’s has so many baked goods; I was sure their cupcakes would be sub-par. But um, this strawberry one? I wouldn’t choose fruity cupcakes if given the choice, but this frosting was sooo good. It was light and marshmallow-like and tasted like fresh strawberries. I really wanted to try their other flavors, but look how big it is. I couldn’t do it!

DSCN1907

So, I know there are still about a million cupcake places in NYC that I need to visit. And the next time I’m back, I’ll continue my mission. I really wanted to try BabyCakes and Sugar Sweet Sunshine, as well as all your amazing recommendations. Clearly, I need to go back to Billy’s and Magnolia and try more than their cupcakes!

But for now, I need a little cupcake break. I think a week will be just right. If I can make it that long.

  • Hey Sues, what’s your favorite cupcake place in Boston? I’m a total novice in this situation! I have heard great things about Sweet, but what else is out there?

I did the same thing you did when I was in NYC over the summer! My only complaint about bakery cupcakes in general is the massive amount of frosting…. are they trying to send people into diabetic shock?! But they’re all so cute and pretty and sprinkle-y!

Valerie, I LOVE Sweet! They’re delicious classy cupcakes. But I’m also a HUGE fan of Party Favors in Coolidge Corner; they have lots of fun flavors, but their vanilla/vanilla is seriously heaven. Also, Sugar in West Roxbury is amazing. Unfortunately, Boston doesn’t have the huge variety NYC and Chicago have, but what we do have is really good :) Let me know if you try any of them!!

    Susie,

We must have just missed each other that entire trip! Steven and I didn’t make it to Fluffy’s or go inside Magnolia’s, but we had the mint choc chip and red velvet from Burgers and Cupcakes and I had the Fluffer Nutter and Steven had something with Bananas from Crumbs and we walked past Magnolia’s, nearly in a sugar coma. So good to see you on our trip.
