The thing about life these days is that everyone’s almost always on the go. Events to attend, loved ones to spend time with, kids to drop off at after-school activities, dentist, doctor, bills to pay, and the list goes on as your head continues to spin out of control. And sometimes, through all of this chaos, we somehow manage to forget about the most important things, like a properly planned dinner. And goodness knows what happens when dinner is forgotten. We order takeout, start snacking, or begin to raid the cabinets and refrigerator attempting to whip something up and before you know it it’s 10pm and you’re eating your arm. Insanity, really.
This is where Healthy Habits Kitchen comes into play, since it’s the solution to fast, affordable, and healthy meals. The real beauty about Healthy Habits is they’re taking the prep work out of cooking. You still have the homemade meal since technically you’re doing the cooking, but all of the local veggies from the farmer’s market, sauces, and toppings are measured out, chopped, and pre-packaged. I personally enjoy the prep work sometimes and find it to be relaxing, but if you’re in a rush it can definitely save you time to have it done beforehand. All you have to do with the Healthy Habits meals is cook, serve, and devour.
Last week Sues and I had the pleasure of making a visit to the Healthy Habits Kitchen in Wellesley, Massachusetts. We sat down with owner, Sue Schochet, who started the company in December of 2008. All of the meals that leave the kitchen are restaurant quality, must be under 400 calories per serving, both kid and adult friendly, and approved by a dietician for proper portion sizes and nutritional values. Each meal is packaged in a “kit”, which averages about $5/serving, and contains all of the ingredients necessary to prepare your dinner. Each kit is labeled with the exact contents, expiration date, freeze date, and serving size.
We toured the kitchen where the magic happens and visited the stations where the kits are all prepared.
The freezer and fridge are what dreams are made of, really. Check out the organization!
Sue was so kind and let us select three meals to take home. The menu changes seasonally every month and I started to form a little crush on the August menu. We chose the Bloody Mary Steak Tips with Brown Rice, Mahi-Mahi with Lemon-Butter Granola Topping, and Cherry Burgers. We actually had a sample of the cherry burger while we were chatting with Sue and decided life couldn’t go on if we didn’t take the full portion home DELICIOUS.
We headed back to Sues’ apartment and got to cookin’ and tastin’. We figured since Chris would be home between the 3 of us we could easily eat and sample all of the food. It’s research, folks
(There were two pieces of mahi mahi, we did one with the granola and one without since it contained nuts)
As we were enjoying the final product of our “family dinner” we all thought the food tasted incredibly homemade and fresh! We even said we could definitely make all of this from scratch but imagine how much more time it would have taken and how much more expensive it would be to buy all of the ingredients individually. I think these meals are the perfect solution for people who have unpredictable weekly schedules and are always on the go. If you buy a handful of these meals a month and store them in the freezer for the nights you don’t have the time to run to the grocery store, they can definitely save the day.
