In case you haven’t noticed in the past almost 3 years (!!) WANM has been in existence, I am not a crafty person. Nope, I leave the crafts to Chels and I stick to the kitchen (where disasters can easily be shoved down the garbage disposal!). It’s not that I don’t want to get into crafts; I’ve just never been good at them. I like following recipes. I don’t like open-ended assignments where I have to choose colors and designs. I have no patience waiting for things to dry and I don’t have a steady hand for decorating. My art teacher in 4th grade laughed at me because I, allegedly, don’t hold scissors correctly. Crafts and I do not get along.
But still. Martha Stewart doesn’t just cook now, does she? And you can’t get better at something if you don’t try. I just needed a little something to get me excited about crafts. Answer? GLITTER.
It started with these:
The Kate Spade Nell Glitter Flats. Swoon. But at $285, there was no way they were fitting into my budget. Then I spotted these:
The Gap Glitter Ballet Flats. But they weren’t exactly what I wanted (too sequiny rather than glittery). And $50 is still a lot for me to spend on a pair of Gap ballet flats.
And then, the other day, I was watching the Today Show and they had a whole segment on DIY glittering. And they showed everyone how to glitter their own shoes. And from there, the idea was born that I would do it myself!
I was immediately super excited, but Chris was a bit skeptical when I told him. He worried that glitter would cover the entire apartment by the time I was through. Understandable. Another reason my craftiness suffers is that I’m kinda sorta messy about things (I think it goes back to the whole patience thing). But once I get ideas into my head, he knows there’s no way to hold me back!
So, I did a little research and found quite a few bloggers who had the same idea for DIY glitter shoes. Everyone was shouting about the wonders of Mod Podge. So, I decided to discover them for myself. And now I’ll never look back. Mod Podge really is that amazing. I also purchased a pretty large container of multi-color glitter, since I wasn’t sure how much I’d need and some clear glaze to spray over the shoes when I was done. This Design Master Dresden Glaze looked best since it was “flexible”. Of course, I also needed a little spongy brush and a pair of plain flats. I found these perfect ones for $12.99 at Target. Since I’m used to the recipe thing, I’ll lay it all out for you, ingredients and everything!
DIY Glitter Flats:
• Mod Podge (about 2 ounces)
• Glitter (any color, about 2 ounces)
• Foam Brush
• Clear Glaze Spray ( a few sprays)
• Pair of plain flats (and color will do)
All together, I spent about $32 on supplies. So, it’s not like I saved a ton of money making my own glittler flats, but besides the shoes, I have enough materials to make at least another 3 pairs. Plus, I’m sure I could find shoes on clearance somewhere for $4 or something; I just didn’t want to keep looking (remember the whole patience thing?). The shoes could seriously be any hideous color you find for cheap because when you’re done glittering, you won’t be able to see the color.
Start by mixing the Mod Podge with the glitter. I suggest using A LOT of glitter.
Brush a thin coat of the glitter/glue on to the shoe. At first, you’ll probably be like “Uhhhh. This looks weird.” And it does. But don’t worry because the Mod Podge will dry clear. My first round, I didn’t use quite as much glitter as I did the next few coats.
Since crafts and I don’t usually get along and it was Sunday morning, I figured I would sip a mimosa while I crafted. See? You can combine hobbies. Make it fun!
It helped.
Continue glittering both shoes all over. If your shoe has a larger, different color sole, you’ll probably want to put masking tape around it. Lucky for me, my shoe was all shoe. Sorry, I don’t know the technical words regarding shoes.
You’ll probably need to hold the shoe from the inside, so you don’t get yourself covered in glitter. Not that I would have minded much. But I tried to remember Chris’s fear of a glittered apartment and I was careful. That’s love right there.
Once you have the initial coat on, you’ll need to let it dry. With Mod Podge it took about 25 minutes. Then I brushed another coat on. Let it dry. Then another coat. I thought 3 was probably enough, but I went for 4 for good measure.
Once the last coat dried, I gave a healthy spray of the glaze spray and let that dry, too.
And behold: The Glitter!
I have to admit I’m pretty thrilled with my brand new glitter flats.
I wore them around today and they even seem pretty sturdy. The glitter is stuck on there like whoa (thank you Mod Podge!), but the shoes are still super flexible. I can bend them and the glitter is not going anywhere.
So, I’ll probably end up wearing these everywhere when I want a dressy look, but don’t feel like I’m in the mood for heels. They look snazzy with black tights.
But I’m also loving them for dressing up jeans a bit.
I just can’t get over how easy it was to DIY these glitter flats. And how little of a mess I made- the glitter/Mod Podge mix doesn’t spread everywhere. I have a feeling I’m going to have quite a few pairs of glitter flats in my closet very soon… In all different colors. Is anyone else up for a pair?! Perhaps a giveaway could be coming soon!
And since tis’ the season to be sparkly (not that I won’t be wearing these flats ALL year), I obviously had to wear some glitter polish to match my shoes.
Don’t get me wrong; I’m not going to turn into some big-time crafter. My place will probably always be in the kitchen (wow, I’m like a 50s housewife), but now I’m feeling a bit more confident at stepping to the crafting table from time to time. And yes, I probably will need a crafting table if I want to continue using glitter in the apartment. And most of the crafts I do in the future probably will involve glitter.
Man, I LOVE the holidays.

Love this idea! This is similar to how I used to glitter tap shoes and ballet slippers for dance recitals as a teenager. If you can’t find cheap flats at Target or similar stores, and you plan on wearing these mostly indoors, try satin ballet slippers from a online dance supply company. They are maybe $12 and are super comfy.
This is awesome! One question, though. What kind of material are your flats made of? Vinyl or canvas or? I have a few pairs of flats, some Target vinyl ones and a couple canvas type from Old Navy. Will Mod Podge stick to any kind of material? Thanks for the info, I’m totally going to do this myself!
At which step did you add the glitter? The end? I see four coats of Mod Podge in your instructions but no glitter until the very end. They turned out great, so I’d really like to know how exactly you did this.

BrawlerBarbie- I don’t know if you saw, but the first step was mixing the Mod Podge with the glitter. So when you spread it on the shoe, it’s a glitter/Mod Podge mixture. This cuts down on the mess and gets the glitter sticking on the shoe really well. I kept adding more glitter to my mod podge and mixing it up before spreading it on the shoe. Good luck!

Too cute…and so creative! I like to think I am crafty, but lately it is the lack of space that limits my creativity. However for this month’s supper club I strung cranberries along ribbon around wine glass stems and the decanter for cranberry wreaths as an added festive touch! It was simple but added so much to the dinnerware! No favorite craft but I do like to dress up my dinner table for any occasion.

I tried it but when i walked around in my flats, then it started peeling off at that point in the shoe where it creases. I peeled it all off and tried it again but using a different method but finishing it with that clear glaze spray. Hope it works out this time… cuz i love them. I’m going to make a pair for my daughter once the technique is perfected.
I found this via Craftgawker and I just had to share another glue possibility with you. I’ve been glittering shoes for a while now (it’s very addictive), and my glue of choice is Alene’s Flexible Stretchable. It’s made for bendy things, so it doesn’t crack along the toe line of shoes. I also love glittering heels; I just use painter’s tape to create perfectly clean lines between the upper and the heel.

I’ve been using modge podge religiously for craft products since about age 10 (no lie!) i love to make collages, usually modge podge collages on plain cvs photo albums and stuff.
People always overestimate the difficult of DIYing. Once you have the right tools, it’s pretty easy and very fun. I DIY Christian Louboutin shoes with crystals if anyone was interested in checking it out.

@bobby- I don’t think it’s absolutely necessary! I just got it “just in case,” but have NO experience with crafts so had no clue what I was doing… I got a random brand and it seems to work so far. But honestly, the Mod Podge seems to secure all the glitter on the shoe just fine! Good luck

Ok, I loved these in your pictures. Loved. I had a pair a couple years ago that I found at Target and I wore them so much that I wore through the soles of them. So naturally I went out and got the materials immediately, to try our a practice pair before I make pink ones to wear for my wedding in May!

I love this idea and I’m planning on making pairs of them as gifts for some close female friends. (Of course, I’m also going to make a pair for myself.) I’m just wondering how well this has held up since you’ve glittered the shoes. Also, do you think that shoe sealant would work? The cashier in the art supply store I got my Mod Podge from said that shoe sealant would be better than spray glaze, but I’m not so sure.

@Angie- Hmmm I really don’t know. Like I say in the post, I’m not generally crafty and took a chance with this project and ended up loving it. But I can’t say for certain how it would work on other shoe fabrics. I want to say it would work because Mod Podge is amazing… But I can’t guarantee the glitter won’t end up cracking or something… Let me know if you try it!

What a great idea! My kids are ALWAYS scuffing their shoes! This might be a good fix for them! Does the mod podge end up cracking once it’s totally dry, or is it flexible? I have little ones that WILL test your answer!

@Amethyst I think any protector type spray would work! Just to prevent them from cracking and the glitter from flaking off

I just tried making my own blueish/turquoise glitter flats using a mix of several Martha Stewart glitters (they sell a gorgeous 24-pack) and a pair of Crocs flats. They look amazing! I think the Martha Stewart glitters give it a smoother finish because the particles are smaller. And the plastic-y smoothness of the Crocs help too. The Crocs even had two ugly holes on the top that I’ve strung ribbon through to make it look like the Kate Spade ones! Thank you for the wonderful idea!

i too have been drooling over the expensive name brand glittery flats. but using this idea i just made a pair of my own! the only thing i changed, was that i used a finer glitter (it was more like powder). they came out really well, and uber sparkly. thanks for the idea!

@Lacey- Did you use the Mod Podge and make sure to let it fully dry? And then use a spray sealant at the end so the glitter stays put? The only other thing I can think of is that the material of your shoes was different from mine… though I’ve heard of people trying this with all different types of shoes…
LOVE these. So cute. My favorite crafts usually involve soap or jewelry. I especially love glass tile jewelry and making soaps that look like food.
I made these, but the only glitter they had that I wanted was white glitter. Sadly it was too clear
It didn’t go on very well. I’m still going to keep trying to layer it on top, but I’m at like four layers and still not very glittery. Amazing idea though, perhaps i’ll just need to buy some new glitter.

@Kristin- I haven’t really had any problems with mine and I’ve worn them LOTS. There are some small cracks in the glitter, but it’s not falling off and you can’t even tell unless you look really closely… I put my glitter on really thickly, so to minimize cracks, I’d do lighter layers!

For crafts like this, modge podge is indeed heaven sent. So far did any of the glitters fall off? That’s my worry about this project. Although I really don’t mind leaving a trail of glitter behind.
@Anna- No trails of glitter for me!! I’ve worn these shoes a ton and the only issue is that a few little cracks have formed. But you can only see them if you look up close, so they don’t bother me at all

@Ally- Like I say, I’m definitely not a crafting expert… I’m thinking if the leather is very flexible, it should work. My shoes were a kind of fake leather and they’ve held up really well. A few cracks, but I’ve worn them a lot and you can’t see the cracks unless you look up close!

A few years ago I came across some (adult) ballet flats that were on sale for – get this – 74 cents a pair. They were pretty funky designs but I bought 3 pairs and never wore them. This project would be perfect for them – if only I hadn’t just sold them all in a yard sale! Bummer!!!

Hey! When I saw this, I knew I just HAD to try it! I’m in the middle of doing it right now.. And it’s not turning out as fabulous as yours did! Advice for people looking to try this: don’t buy too fine of glitter and WAIT until they are dry to put the next layer on! I hope mine still turn out and dry fully, but right now they look gray and ishy because I didn’t let the layers dry all the way :/
@Kelsey Hi! I hope they turn out! I do remember mine looking kind of weird at first, but then because the glue dries clear, they were much prettier when all dry! But you’re probably right about bigger glitter being better, though mine was actually quite fine… I just layered it on

I just finished making these with a pair of well-loved flats I couldn’t bear to part with. I’m probably way too old to wear these shoes, but I could not possibly care less. I did find a multipack of glitter with a little jar of black included. I used a good bit of that, so they’re darker but still plenty sparkly. They are adorable! Thanks for sharing this great idea.

Keep up the kewl imagination! Thank you for sharing. Oh I think it could be really cool if you found some old worthless shoes that were heals and did the same thing, pick your glitter carefully though like a beautiful black diamond glitter on some black heals. Your imagination is your only limit.
I just tried this with a pair of Mossimo flats. They were originally red, and came out nice! Not as sparkly as yours, but I think it’s because of the glitter being so fine. I can’t wait to do it again–I’m thinking an yellowish-orangish pair…….Fun project!

@Syd- Definitely! I think it works better on some fabrics than others… my shoes were kind of vinyl-y and that worked out really well! Let me know how it goes
Okay, so I just did this with heels and I have a few general hints for the process in general. The heels turned out fantastic by the way.
It helps to get fine glitter instead of the thicker kind, it blends better with the Mod Podge, and brushes on easier.
Also get some masking tape and tape around the inside edges of the shoes so that it makes a thin band with no glitter on it. It looks smoother and the glitter doesn’t hang over the sides.

General question, Say I’m wearing my flats and it suddenly rains is the clear glaze going to keep them from falling apart?
I’m thinking that Goodwill, a local thrift store, or a grandmother’s closet would be good too. The older styles are “back” but not necessarily the colors. Glitter would fix that!

Just kind of stumbled across this through a friend’s posting. I think I will try to revive an old pair of Wal-Mart specials. Got the shoes, got the glitter…got the Mod Podge. Now to get the gumption to try it!
Can this be done on a cork wedge heel?
@Kristina- Hmmm I’m not sure if the glitter would stick too well to the cork. But it’s worth a try? I only tried with this one pair of shoes and it worked fabulously, but I can’t speak for every material!

Payless sold a pair of flats like this. They were in the childrens section since Im a size 5 in womens which is a size 2 or 3 in kids. They were $15 but i dont think they sell them anymore. They looked exactly the same.

I tried your method Friday nite to cover black fabric ballerina flats with red glitter and followed your method. Woked perfectly! Dance recital is tomorow night, theme Wizard of Oz. My granddaughter had red glitter shoes when she was 3 for dress up and they were big enough to use until she was 5,and has been without her red glitter shoes, until now. They look so good she can wear them anywhere! Thanks so much.

you know, it’s just a thought, but you could find the ugliest pair of flats at Goodwill for like two dollars and use those because it’s not like you will actually see the color or anything. Great Idea! I will definitely be trying this one out!

This is such a wonderful idea! I have been working on them all night, but I am having some issues with the Mod Podge and glitter (which is really fine). When I spread the mixture onto the shoe, I end up getting little glittery clumps. Some stay on the shoe, but many just fall off. I can see that underneath all the clumping that the smooth glittery part is really cute, but the clumps are all over my shoe. Did this happen to you? Any tips to help it not clump?

Wow! I found a $10 pair of cloth flats at Wal-Mart..followed your instructions and now I have a fantastic pair of glitter flats! I love funky shoes and to make them myself was even better!! Thanks for the site.
Just be sure to use a shoe made from porous fabric! If you use a slick shoe, it’s much easier for the glitter to crack and peel off. (Learned this the hard way a few Halloweens ago when some DIY ruby slippers fell apart after I wore them for a few minutes.) I like the multicolor look!
my 6 yr old daughter will LOVE this idea. She is a pretty princess and loves anything that sparkles, lol. this will we an awesome project for us to do together. She is a bit of a shoe horse like her Mimi so i’m sure she will want them in several colors. CUTE!!! Thanks for sharing.
This is great! I’m going to make my daughter tinkerbell shoes for Halloween. But, do you HAVE TO use the glaze spray afterwards? That’s the one thing I didn’t buy.
@Cathy- Sounds awesome! I think a lot depends on what the shoes are made of and since I’ve only made these with one type, I don’t know how the glitter reacts on all fabrics. But if she’s just wearing them for Halloween, I think they’d at least last for that! You can always buy it and coat them after.

Love it and can’t wait to show my girls. I have one girl that just loves all that is glitter. I actually have four girls so this will definitely come in handy. So the mimosa??? what no recipe for that?…LOL
I never considered myself crafty. But then I got kids. And the rest is history.
I have flats which are still in a good condition but their color is by now a bit shabby. I intend to spray them with glitter, , than add some glue, and hopefully it will turn out well. I’ll let you know when I do it.
