American Craft Beer Fest 2012

It’s that time of year again! American Craft Beer Fest in Boston. Now, I’ll admit, when I first got word that ACBF was happening the weekend before our wedding this year, I said, “Oh, heck no. There’s no way we’re going this year.” But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I should be OK in terms of wedding stuff by this weekend. Not to mention, I knew how much it meant to Chris. It would be our 4th year going and we didn’t want to ruin our streak. So, we went. And I’m really glad we did. Though yes, I’ve been running around like a crazy person the rest of the weekend, trying to get things done. But that’s OK; it’s all fun!

Since I really didn’t want to have a rough Sunday and be completely unproductive, I knew I didn’t want to drink a ton. So, I decided to only sip on beers that I had never tried before. And if I started drinking something and didn’t love it, I wouldn’t finish. Lucky for me, I tried some really awesome beers.

And also, the pretzel necklaces were even better than last year’s. Beth, Adam, and Lesa made them this year and they were out of control. In fact, I may have eaten a few more than necessary just to keep them from weighing me down.

Our first stop at ACBF was Throwback Brewery. Not only is it close by in North Hampton, New Hampshire, but they feature a couple beers that immediately caught our eye.

ACBF-2012-Throwback-Beer.jpg

Like the Spicy Bohemian Pilsener with Jalapeños. You know how I am about spice, and especially spice in alcohol, so this was a must-try ASAP. And… It was one of the best beers of the night. It was super spicy, but in a really fabulous way!

I didn’t try any Pretty Things beer this go around, but only because they didn’t have anything I hadn’t tried yet. But I always love stopping by their absolutely beautiful booth. Definitely best in show.

Another totally new to me brewery? San Jose, California’s, Ass Kisser. Unique brewery name and veryyy unique and fun beers.

ACBF-2012-Ass-Kisser-Beer.jpg

I mean, have you ever had a vanilla pale ale? I can now say I have. And it is glorious. While I love a good serious beer, I also have a thing for fun beers and this Vanilla Pale Ale was all about fun. It actually tasted a bit like an alcoholic cream soda. I can definitely see myself drinking this beer at a BBQ.

Or else their Strawberry Wit. Most definitely a summer sipper.

Of course, we made a stop by one of our old favorites, Ommegang. We had the chance to visit the brewery in Cooperstown, NY, last summer and it was a fantastic experience. One of my very favorite breweries with a completely consistent range of delicious brews.

ACBF-2012-Ommegang-Brewery.jpg

I forced myself away from my old favorites, 3 Philosophers and Rare Vos to try the Belgian-style porter, Seduction. Good choice! You could definitely taste the chocolate tones, along with a little bit of coffee, too. One of my favorite flavor combinations!

ACBF-2012-Ommegang-Beer.jpg

I also had a sip of my sister’s Adoration and loved the spicy, fruitiness of it. More winners from Ommegang!

And now that I know Wilco will be doing a show at the brewery in July, I’m very tempted to plan a little trip back to Cooperstown…

I may be a little bias, but I have to say High & Mighty was one of my favorite stops of the evening. Remember when we made beer cupcakes for their Don Cornelius event? Well, I tasted one of their new brews on Saturday that I KNOW would make another delicious baked good.

ACBF-2012-High-and-Mighty-Beer.jpg

Fumata Habanera. It’s a smoked black lager with chili peppers and one of the most unique and fantastic beers I’ve had in a long time. You have to be into smoky and spicy to enjoy this one and since I’m a big fan of both, I was obsessed. High & Mighty isn’t currently selling Fumata Habanera, but we will find a way to get our hands on some more of this. And you should, too.

This was definitely Chris’s favorite beer of the evening, as well. Give him spicy and he is a happy camper!

An old favorite, every year we stop at Dogfish Head Brewery‘s booth. When I spotted Sah’tea on the menu, I knew I’d be tasting it.

ACBF-2012-Dogfish-Head.jpg

I don’t think I’ve had it since last year’s ACBF and I’ve missed it. I seriously think this year it tasted even better than before. If you like ginger and spices in your beer, you’ll love this one.

Pretty new to the craft beer scene and super local is Slumbrew (straight out of Somerville!).

ACBF-2012-Slumbrew.jpg

I’ve tried most of the beers, but had another taste of Happy Sol, a hefeweizen fermented with blood oranges. Much needed over this icky, rainy weekend.

ACBF-2012-Slumbrew-2.jpg

Another all-time favorite is Left Hand Brewing Company. Their Milk Stout is to die for!

ACBF-2012-Left-Hand-Brewery.jpg

I was also a big fan of the quote at their booth- “Sometimes you’re not in the mood for what everyone else is having.” True that. Especially if that “everything else” is Bud Light!

ACBF-2012-Left-Hand-Quote.jpg

While this was me and Chris’s 4th year at ACBF, it was Beth and Adam’s 3rd. They didn’t go with us the first year, but we met them out after and it was the first time they met Chris. Fabulous memories!

ACBF-2012-Beth-and-Adam.jpg

I was obsessed with Element Brewing Company‘s taps.

ACBF-2012-Element-Beer-Taps.jpg

And their Summer Pilsner Fusion was  fantastic, too.

ACBF-2012-Element-Beer.jpg

Another awesome thing about ACBF? The men’s bathroom long is always longer than the woman’s.

ACBF-2012-Bathroom.jpg

As is tradition, after ACBF, we headed to the North End for canollis. This time we went to Cafe Vittoria where we indulged in the Cafe Vittoria coffee (coffee with Kahlua, brandy, and tiramisu liquor).

ACBF-2012-Cafe-Vittoria.jpg

And a couple chocolate canolli.

ACBF-2012-Canolli.jpg

I would say this year’s ACBF was a huge success. I can’t even believe we’ve gone for 4 years in a row, but I have a feeling we’ll be back again and again as long as nothing gets in our way. You know, like a pesky wedding :)

ACBF-2012-Crew-3.jpg

Seriously though, I’m always amazed by how many breweries pop up that I’ve never heard of before and how many completely new and innovative beers are introduced. This is one of my very favorite events in Boston… And surprisingly, every year we’ve gone, everyone who attends seems very well-behaved (which I think is a rarity at a drinking event in Boston!). It’s just a lot of people who love good beer getting together to learn about new breweries and new beers. It doesn’t get any better than that!

If you’re a beer-drinker, what’s your most recent favorite new beer discovery?

American Craft Beer Fest 2011

Another year, another American Craft Beer Fest.

IMG_8264.jpg

This year marked the Beer Advocate’s 4th annual American Craft Beer Fest in Boston and the 3rd that I’ve been to (first and second here). In case you don’t know, ACBF is the largest celebration of beer on the East Coast. There were over 100 brewers at this year’s ACBF and over 500 beers. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to try all 500 beers, but that’s probably a good thing as I’d be dead if I had. Let’s face it- I didn’t even try a fraction of the beers available, which is why I have to continue going back every year.

If you go to American Craft Beer Fest in the future, it’s a very good idea try to pick out the breweries and beers you want to hit up ahead of time. Otherwise, it can get a bit overwhelming and you might find yourself missing out on what you really want to try. Another thing we finally learned after the first two years of ACBF? Always bring pretzel necklaces.

IMG_0195.jpg

You might get some funny looks, but most beer fest veterans know how vital this quick snack and palate cleanser is. My sister’s Chicago friends, Kim and Lesa, were visiting this weekend and Kim, Beth, and I strung together the pretzel necklaces while sitting in the sun. Chris offered to pick Lesa up from the airport, so we decided to make Chris an extra special pretzel necklace.

IMG_0193

I think he loved it.

Chris also designed a special web app that allowed users to keep track of all the beers they were tasting at ACBF. I’m known for being horrible about note-taking when I’m at events like this (I always think, “oh, I’ll remember this one!” and never do), so this app helped a lot. I’m thinking he’ll improve it even more in time for next year’s big American Craft Beer Festival.

Anyway, I’ll just do a quick run-down of some of my favorite beers of the evening.

I had never heard of Defiant Brewing Co. located in Pear River, New York. But I was excited to discover them and their clean bottle designs. The Belgian Style Tripel Ale was surprisingly sweet for a Tripel, but I mean that in the best way possible. Even if you don’t generally like heavy ales, I think you’d find this one shockingly drinkable.

IMG_8266.jpg

Pretty Things is one of my very favorite breweries and is local to Cambridge, MA. There’s so much to love, from the name to the pretty bottles to the fun beer names.

IMG_8271

I had already tried all the beers Pretty Things was offering, but had forgotten how delicious Fluffy White Rabbits was. I love my hops and appreciate that a beer with “rabbits” in the name is extra “hoppy.” Hehe.

IMG_8267

Watch City Brewing is another local brewery, from Waltham, MA, and they had a whole host of interesting beers for tasting. Of course, I had to try out the Bacon Beer called Cyrus’s Oink Oink. Whoa, talk about interesting. I’d say this was more of a smokey beer than a bacon beer, but if you like the smokey flavor, you’ll love this one. It’s worth a taste anyway, just so you can say you did.

IMG_8277.jpg

Boulevard Brewery had us hop behind their booth for a group photo while we sipped on their The Sixth Glass. This was actually one of my favorite beers of the evening- it was a bit sweet and fruity, but also dark and intense. I also love how Boulevard describes the beer on their website as being a “deep and mysterious libation.”

IMG_8262.jpg

Another one of my favorite beers of the evening was the Week Sauce Coffee Porter from Left Hand Brewing. Unfortunately, this beer is not readily available in stores because if it were, I would be buying it all summer long. I generally love coffee porters anyway, but this was one of the best I had. It actually poured and tasted just like a black iced coffee. Though you can’t purchase this beer in stores, you can buy the coffee used to make it off Left Hand’s website. Therefore, you can have it for breakfast. And, in the meantime, I fully recommend Left Hand’s Milk Stout, as well.

IMG_8279.jpg

Another favorite brewery is Dogfish Head in Delaware. I was excited to see the Olde School Barleywine as an offering since I haven’t yet tried it an love barleywines.

IMG_8280

It was almost like candy! Well, candy with 15% alcohol, of course. The beer is brewed with dates and figs and it wasn’t overly sweet but had a distinct thickness to it, without being reminiscent of syrup. Definitely a barleywine I’d pick up for future sipping.

IMG_8281.jpg

I recently discovered Uinta Brewing Co.’s Crooked line and was immediately attracted to their super fun bottle labels.

IMG_8284

This time, I tried, Uinta’s Wyld and enjoyed it much more than I generally like pale ales. I definitely tasted some grapefruit notes in there and think it would be the perfect summer patio beer.

IMG_8287

I was excited to see Brooklyn Brewery was back with The Concoction.

IMG_8290.jpg

I mean, you know how I am about all things ginger, so I obviously loved sipping on this one. It was a tad perfumey, but is definitely a fun, once-in-a-while beer.

IMG_8293

And then, another of my favorite foods met beer. We discovered St. John Brewers and their Tropical Mango Pale Ale. What?! Can St. John Brewers read my mind?

IMG_8308.jpg

Of course, this beer isn’t for everyone. But if you’re looking for something light, fruity, and summery, sip on a bottle of St. John’s Tropical Mango in the sun. It legitimately tastes like paradise.

IMG_8312.jpg

An old favorite, Mayflower Brewing Co., was also in town from the nearby Plymouth, MA.

IMG_8294

I don’t know why Chris and I haven’t yet been to Mayflower Brewery, but I have a feeling we’ll be making it one of our summer stops. I should probably take Chris to Plymouth Plantation anyway since it’s kind of essential for anyone making their home in Massachusetts.

IMG_8296

Baxter Brewing is a brewery in Lewiston, Maine, that just happens to be the first craft brewery in New England to can its entire line of beers.

IMG_8298

I love a good canned craft beer and enjoyed the hoppiness of the Stowaway I.P.A. I think the can is pretty genius, too.

IMG_8300.jpg

I did some sipping at Cambridge Brewing Company, too. It was basically an evening of meeting new breweries, combined with reuniting with old favorites.

IMG_8301.jpg

My last stop of ACBF was Goose Island out of Chicago. I love Goose Island’s strong bourbon beers, but this time I opted for something a bit lighter.

IMG_8322

In fact, I chose the Sofie because it was compared to champagne. For a lighter beer, I absolutely loved it for its orange and vanilla notes and light sparkle.

IMG_8320.jpg

Beer, pretzels, and love: does it get any better than that?

IMG_8305.jpg

While I wasn’t as fastidious in my note-taking as I wish I were, I do think I was pretty picky on exactly what I tasted. There were way too many options to just taste everything that came your way.

IMG_8313

Though I do wish I had made it by Southern Tier‘s booth to try their 2XIPA. But I’ll be heading to the brewery this summer on vacation, so hopefully I’ll get the opportunity to try it (and more!) then.

Of course, we also had a little bit of fun at the expense of others (others being Adam).

IMG_8318

But it wouldn’t be ACBF if we didn’t. It also wouldn’t be an American Craft Beer Fest without cannoli from the North End. We made a quick pit stop to pick up cannoli from Caffe Paradisio and then headed to Beth and Adam’s for homemade flatbread. The perfect evening, if I do say so myself.

What’s your favorite beer? Do you enjoy attending beer festivals to discover new breweries?
