Guacaholics Anonymous 2011

We done did it again!

Last night we participated in Guacaholics Anonymous 2! We had so much fun doing it in 2010 that when Aaron, of @eatboston fame, asked us to be amateur guacmakers again this year we jumped on the opportunity. It’s always fun being in the presence of fun Boston chefs and guaclovers alike, especially when it’s all in an effort to raise moolah for hunger relief organizations, Lovin’ Spoonfuls and Community Servings.

(thanks for taking this photo of us, Daisy!)

In typical @eatboston fashion, the event, which was held at Poe’s Kitchen at the Rattlesnake, sold out in a matter of minutes. We knew we had to bring our A game. And also purchase avocados wholesale style to serve all of the attendees. ;)

The actual restaurants participating this year included Zocalo, Ole, Temazcal Tequila Cantina, La Verdad, El Pelon, Boloco, Papagayo, and Anna’s Taqueria. Sadly, we were manning our table the whole night so we didn’t have a great opportunity to try many others out. We were, however, able to taste test Chef Poe’s which was a peach guacamole. Yup, he did! Another one of our favorites was from the other amateur guacmaker, Justin, from Justin Can Cook, who prepared an Asian-inspired guacamole that included water chestnuts, ginger, scallions, and sriracha. Delicious.

Last year we made a bacon guacamole for well over 100 people that was such a huge hit guests came back for seconds. And thirds. This year we decided to stick with what we know (bacon) and add in grated queso blanco, grilled corn, onions, a bit of garlic, sea salt, and tomato. And at the end of the night when we were packing up we realized we forgot to mix the tomato in. Eep! WE ARE NOT MARTHA ;) Thankfully it tasted fine without!

We also had so much fun chatting with each other and everyone who came up to our table that by the time the night ended we realized we had only taken a few photos. And the only photo we had of our actual guacamole was taken with my iPhone. I spoke the words “You’d think after blogging for 4 years we’d have this whole taking photos thing down by now”. You know, a step-by-step breakdown of our guacamole recipe would have been helpful. I guess sometimes we just get lost in the fun we’re having to remember to document it all!

We decided since we had only one photo of guacamole that the rest should be a photo medley of sorts with the man himself, @eatboston.

The night was fabulous and it’s events like this, for good causes, that make Boston such a great city. It’s all about the community in these parts! We hope lots and lots of money was raised for two truly special organizations, Lovin’ Spoonfuls and Community Servings, and we’re looking forward to volunteering more of our time to both!

An Evening at the MFA

Tonight, my friend Heather took me to a birthday dinner at Bravo at the Museum of Fine Arts. Funny how my birthday has somehow morphed into a birthday week, hehe. I never take full advantage of the MFA so I was excited to dine and explore the museum. Did you know on Wednesdays after 4pm the MFA is free? Although leaving a donation is always encouraged… gotta support the arts :)

After about a quick 15 minute wait, dinner began with a basket (or two) of bread, which we quickly devoured.

The chef sent us chicken salad on crostini which was goooood. Heather told me to eat both pieces, so I obviously did ;)

For my meal, I ordered the carbonara off of the appetizer menu. The portion was massive and I felt like no matter how much I ate, it was nearly impossible for me to make a dent in it! Needless to say, it was so flavorful and the perfect dish for the cold rainy weather we’re experiencing in Boston now! Instant comfort.

Actually, I take that back. Heather got the corm and tomato risotto which I took a bite of and it made me a little excited for the cooler weather to get here, which I almost never say. There’s something about a big bowl of creamy risotto that warms the soul like nothing else.

Our waiter attempted with all his might to force dessert upon us but after wine, bread (2 baskets, muah ha ha), pasta, and risotto we decided if we were leaving alive we should pass on the decadent treats.

After dinner we wandered around until the museum closed at 9:45. It was definitely an art-filled evening! We started with the Avedon Fashion 1944-2000 exhibit. I love and appreciate anything that has to do with fashion and I’ve been wanting to check this out. Seeing the process of some vintage Harper’s Bazaar magazine shoots and the timeline of the iconic photographer Richard Avedon‘s work was stunning.

One of my favorite pieces was a mock-up of a Bazaar cover with notes scribbled about. In my opinion, one of the greatest stages in design is the actual process behind the final piece and I love to see other artist’s thought processes. This is the actual mock-up with the final autographed cover shot below:

(Oh, my arm is sticking out like that because my purse is massive. Neat, huh?)

I think we covered mostly all of the exhibits and as we were strolling around I couldn’t help but think I don’t spend nearly as much time there as I should. It’s a part of Boston I don’t often venture out to, even though it’s quite easy to access via public transportation. Also, if you dine at one of the restaurants at the MFA and get your ticket validated you can park in their lot for free! If you’re in Boston, I highly recommend swinging by the MFA on a Wednesday evening. It couldn’t be more gorgeous at night if it tried…

To me, the MFA always reminded me of childhood field trips and art history courses in college, so I never really thought of attending or looking into other events they offered! Do you know of any other hidden gems in Boston or other cities… Places where you wouldn’t normally think to go for an evening out? Do share!

Also, since people have been asking in the comments section where a lot of my clothes are from, my blazer is from Banana Republic, and was part of my birthday gift from my sister and brother-in-law. I’ve been on the lookout for the perfect boyfriend blazer (and perfect boyfriend, tee hee) for a long time. Finally got it, fits like a glove :) And I snagged the “scarf” at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum gift shop earlier this summer. Both are currently blowing my mind. I’m going to try to include where my clothes are from in more posts just so y’all will know! Sound like a plan??
