Red Wine Chocolate Truffles and a Wine Party

Wine Chocolate Truffles.psd

I have the best friends ever. They do things like throw wine tasting parties year after year that I seriously look forward to more than most things in life. In fact, I was just reading my post about last year’s wine party at Kyle and Jeff’s. I ended it by saying, “Now, I’m just wondering what they’re going to do next year. No pressure or anything, guys. But really, this is going to be tough to beat!” Well…. they beat it. And I’ll probably end this post in the same manner today. Because there’s NO way they can beat this year’s party. Right??

I brought along a little dessert, even though, let’s be honest, everyone is far too full for dessert by the time they come out. You’ll see why in a minute. For now, I spotted a recipe for red wine truffles and knew they’d fit right in at a wine tasting. If truffles scare you, don’t let them… they’re the easiest things ever. This recipe has a grand total of 4-5 ingredients.

Red Wine Chocolate Truffles (makes about 30):
Adapted from Pastry Affair
Print this recipe!

  • 8 oz. semi-sweet or bittersweet chocolate
  • 1/2 C dry red wine (I used cabernet)
  • 2 T butter, melted
  • 1/4 C cocoa powder for coating or 8 oz. semisweet or bittersweet chocolate for dipping (I did a mix of both!)

Wine Truffles Ingredients.jpg

I wanted my truffles to be full on chocolate power. So, I used a 70% cacao bar. You could always use something a bit more mild if you insist!

I used the 70% Ghirardelli for the truffle and then I decided to coat some of them in the Ghirardelli Intense Dark Cabernet Matinee. Because wine chocolate in wine truffles? Double the cabernet, double my happiness!

Anyway, chop up the 8 oz. of chocolate you’ll be using the form the truffles.

Wine Truffles Chopped Chocolate.jpg

And put that chocolate into a bowl.

Wine Truffles Chocolate Bowl.jpg

Bring your wine to a boil in a medium saucepan.

Wine Truffles Wine boiling.jpg

And immediately pour it over the bowl of chocolate.

Wine Truffles Wine over Chocolate.jpg

Let the mixture stand for about 5 minutes. And then stir. Add the melted butter here, too.

Doesn’t this look like the richest, most beautiful chocolate ever? Pop the bowl in the fridge for about an hour to chill and harden.

Wine Truffles Smooth Chocolate.jpg

For some reason I stopped taking photos here. Probably because my hands were completely covered in chocolate at this point. But the rest is easy. Once the chocolate has hardened, decide what you want to coat them in. I decided to do half in cocoa powder and the other half in more chocolate. So, I melted the cabernet chocolate in a double broiler and placed my cocoa powder on a plate.

Then I picked up about a tablespoon of chocolate, rolled it in my hands until a ball was formed. Don’t roll too much or the chocolate will start crumbling.

I rolled some of the truffles in cocoa powder and some of them I dipped in my melted chocolate. The chocolate ones I put sprinkles on, too. Obvi. I placed the truffles on a wax paper-covered tray and popped them in the fridge until ready to serve.

Hooray! My first time making truffles.

Wine Chocolate Truffles 3.jpg

And they involved red wine. Which is pretty much the best idea ever. I’m proud to say these truffles involved double the chocolate and double the wine, when you consider the wine chocolate I used.

Next up? I totally want to try a white wine truffle. With white wine (duh) and white chocolate.

But back to the whole reason for the truffles. All because of this amazing couple:

Wine Party Kyle and Jeff.jpg

Like I said, their wine parties get better every year.

Wine Party Glasses.jpg

Jeff is one of the best cooks I’ve EVER met and Kyle is one of the most creative people I’ve EVER met. And thus, they make the perfect team. Jeff cooks and Kyle puts all kinds of awesome touches on the party.

Like the party menu. So you know exactly what you’re getting into.

Even the water had the perfect signage this year!

I was too easily distracted and talked too much to get photos of everything, but the photos I did take are already making me hungry again.

The gougeres are a wine party staple because they’re such a fan favorite. You have to start by eating several of them with a glass of champagne, but you can’t let it get too out of hand since there are still 9 other stations waiting for you.

Wine Party Gougeres.jpg

So, you move on to station two. Which might have been my favorite station of the evening.

Wine Party Brunch Bites Sign.jpg

Yup. hash brown with pancetta and quail egg. I’ll let the photo do the talking.

Wine Party Brunch Bites.jpg

What’s better than a brunch bite with some prosecco?

Let’s move on to the parmesan cups with goat cheese mousse. See this platter? I’m pretty sure Chris ate the entire thing. That’s not even a joke. At one point, he made me get a couple for him because he worried the group sitting around the table would think he had issues. He does. He has an addition. I’m trying to decide if I should learn to make them so he can have them all the time or if we should keep them a special occasion type deal. If Jeff wasn’t such a fabulous guy, I’d worry that Chris only likes him for his parmesan cups… Wine Party Parmesan Cups.jpg

This photo was not staged at all. After finishing a conversation with someone, I saw Chris bolt into the other room. I obviously followed him with the camera and snapped this photo the second he turned around. Nice try, buddy.

You can’t pass by the sushi station.

Wine Party Sushi Sign.jpg

Really, Jeff and Kyle? You’re going to make sushi for a party where you’re already making a million other things? AND you’re going to make the most perfect-looking sushi ever? I have no words.

Even the stations with “simple” foods were extremely well done. Also, I think this is my favorite sign of Kyle’s.

Wine Party Charcuterie Sign.jpg

Fine, I’ll eat some charcuterie. And drink a glass of pinot noir.

Wine Party Charcuterie.jpg

The meatballs and polenta are a yearly favorite and go perfectly with chianti. We were lucky enough to take home leftovers, too!

Wine Party Meatballs and Polenta.jpg

And the chicken saltimbocca tortellini  with butternut squash was delectable.

Wine Party Tortellini.jpg

Station 10 ranked right up there with my favorites.

Wine Party Crispy Pork Belly Sign.jpg

I could have made an entire meal of the crispy pork belly on steamed buns.

There’s not much I wouldn’t do for a platter of this in front of me right this second.

Wine Party Crispy Pork Belly.jpg

And that doesn’t even include the braised beef and mashed potatoes or the pulled BBQ park sliders. I told you there’s a good reason nobody has room for dessert.

Wine party year 3! And definitely the best yet. Which is saying A LOT.

Wine Party Kyle and Sues.jpg

I always love hanging out with Kim, too! And was thrilled to see Kyle’s sister (and new mama!) Lindsay. Really, I just featured the food and decor at the party…. But the company is another thing that makes these parties such a hit. Kyle and Jeff have such a fabulous group of people in their lives and the conversation is always right up there with the food.

Of course.

Wine Party You Had Me at Merlot.jpg

Best friends ever? Best friends ever. I’m so lucky to have Kyle and Jeff in my life and could probably gush forever about how much I love them, but I think you probably get it by now. Though really, it’s not just because they throw parties like this!

But still, I’m totally counting on them to still be throwing these parties when we’re in our 60s and beyond. But if the parties continue getting better every year, I’m not even quite sure how that will work…

What’s the most fabulous party you’ve been to lately?

Chels’ Favorite Things #21

I’ve been ALL over the place the last few months so I wanted to do a Favorite Things, round-up post of sorts, to sum it all up since I’ve been loving a lot lately! Let’s jump right into it!

GelShine At-Home Gel Colour System

201210230925.jpg

While I was in Texas in August I discovered one of the most fabulous things ever. Let me just preface this by saying, I have the most basic makeup/getting-ready routine so stores like Sephora typically stress me out. I don’t like having tons of options (hello, 24-page menus!?) and I almost always wear the same makeup, so I’ll just let you imagine how I would twitch when I walked into such a huge beauty store. AND, I’ll also say, I’m definitely the kind of person when I see something, like a new polish, eyeshadow, or hair treatment, I convince myself that I need it. So I buy it. Then I use it once. So, for my wallet’s sake, I tried avoiding Sephora at all costs.

Now that being said, while I was in Texas with my sister and Kate, I for some reason had the strongest desire to buy red lipstick. And since there are roughly 12 million shades of red lipstick, I decided to head to Sephora since they carry so many brands. I walked in the store, asked for help, and the lovely salesgirl pretty much handed me a tube of Nars Red Lizard lipstick and said it would look great on me. I tried it on, loved it, and was heading to pay when I heard my sister having a slight panic attack at one of the in-store displays. As I walked over, I noticed she was standing in front of the Gelshine At-Home Gel Colour System.

I think at first I tried talking her out of the purchase but after we started looking at the kit, we realized that it was actually pretty snazzy. Not only does it come with everything you need to do your own gel manicures in about 15 minutes but we quickly realized how much money it would save you. Not having to drive to the salon to get your nails done, not having to chit-chat with your manicurist (not that there’s anything wrong with it… it just takes time!), not having to tip, not having to sit around and wait for your nails to dry.

We left Sephora without the machine. When we got back to my sister’s house we were all still talking about it because it just looked that awesome and then we started reading really good reviews about it online. My brother-in-law ended up chiming in and pointed out that my sister does get her nails done a lot and for $159 we all soon realized that after a few uses, this at-home kit would pay for itself. Before we headed out to dinner that night my brother-in-law ended up driving us all back to the mall so my sister could buy the machine, HA! Good man ;)

The following day was the moment of truth. My sister and I tested the machine out and, I’m not even kidding, we gushed the entire time. If someone had been videotaping us we could have made an infomercial and sold millions of these for an easy payment plan of $29.99/month.

201210230930.jpg

The step-by-step instructions are so simple, too! I finished my own mani in 15 minutes! No drying time or anything extra.

I ended up wearing my polish for about 2 weeks without any chips! And I must admit, my most favorite part about the machine is that it uses an LED light instead of UV, which makes it safer on your hands and skin. When the polish was ready to come off, it actually peeled nicely so I didn’t even have to soak my nails in acetone, which is a huge plus. This is definitely something I will be asking Santa for this year! OBSESSED.

Boxing

201210230924.jpg

That’s right. I’ve been boxing! Every week I, along with two of my most favorite co-workers from Healthworks, Zoe and Sarah, box with one of the trainers. I mean, I’m by no means the next Laila Ali, even though that’s what my dad insists on calling me, but this is such an amazingly sweaty workout. I do enjoy nice arms and boxing has definitely helped keep mine nice and toned. Plus, nothing gets your heart pumping like jump roping and nothing gets your frustration out like punching the heck out of something ;)

Strip T’s

Earlier this month I went to dinner at Strip T’s in Watertown for my friend Becca’s birthday. Dinner was spectacular but peep what we got for dessert. Fried brioche donut with blueberry pastry cream and lemon frosting.

201210230923.jpg

I wept when I cut into this masterpiece. I think a few of us split it? To be completely honest, I can’t even remember because I was blacked out due to excessive happiness. I very well could have eaten the entire thing on my own without even realizing it. Pure joy. As I was eating this I promised myself that if anyone comes to visit me that I would take them to Strip T’s to experience all of their deliciousness.

Little Men

201210230923.jpg

I got to see my cousin’s sons last month who are the most precious gems I’ve ever been around. While my dad and I were in NYC for a sad reason, it was amazing to be reminded of all of this happiness by getting hugs from these two muffins.

Andy Cohen

201210230923.jpg

Have I ever told you that I am madly in love with Andy Cohen? Welp, I am. And when I found out he was coming to Boston (he went to college at BU!) I cleared my calendar so I could get his book, Most Talkative, autographed. The book is hilarious. There were times I would be on the phone with Kate and read her excerpts that had me dying laughing. But not only is it funny, it’s inspiring. His story is fantastic and it gave me the chills how he came full-circle. And If I’m ever a grouch in the morning it’s likely because I stayed up too late to watch his show Watch What Happens Live. I’m slightly obsessed with all Bravo TV programming and it’s mainly because this man is behind it.

I’m always a bit weary to meet celebrities in real life because I don’t want to be disappointed. Some people seem fantastic on TV then you meet them in real life and they’re huge duds or worse, so rude! But I was happy to see that Andy was just as peppy and fun in person as he is on TV. He even said he “loved my sass”!

Pumpkin/Fall

Living in New England it’s kind of a given that you’re obsessed with all things pumpkin and fall. I love summer the most and I’m still in denial that it’s over, but fall is cozy and you get to wear cute clothes and lots of layers. A couple weeks ago I was invited to my friend Sara’s Hipster party. Yes, I dressed up like a hipster and I kind of loved it!

201210230922.jpg

I made a Pumpkin Dip, courtesy of Closet Cooking that was a huge hit. We had it out with the appetizers but it definitely could be a dessert dip, too. I brought some sliced green apples and gingersnaps for dipping purposes. Oh, yum.

201210230921.jpg

Someone even made a pumpkin keg, which was about the most genius things I’ve seen in all of 2012.

Best snack of all time

201210230921.jpg

Something I absolutely love about social media is I get some of the best food ideas. A few days ago the lovely Eat Well With Janel posted a photo on Instagram of a whole wheat bagel with mashed avocados with hot sauce. Ever since I saw her picture, I’ve been craving this, so I went to the grocery store to buy some bagel thins. While this is just so simple, I probably wouldn’t have ever thought it up on my own, haha. It was so satisfying for lunch yesterday! And as Janel pointed out it also makes a great breakfast. Janel is a Registered Dietitian so if you’re looking for more tasty but healthy meal ideas you should definitely take a look at her blog and follow her on Twitter!
