A Texas-Sized Birthday Weekend

IMG_1896

I just got back home to Boston after the most glorious extra-long weekend in Dallas visiting my sister and brother-in-law. My birthday was last Wednesday and the following day, you better believe I was on a flight to Texas to celebrate :) I’m not typically one for birthday celebrations but since I am officially in the last year in my 20s and Kate’s wedding is in October, we figured we had a lot to celebrate and decided to take one last girl’s trip, minus her bachelorette party, of course!

Kate and I arrived in Dallas on Thursday afternoon and this was no accident. I purposely wanted to get there on a Thursday so we could go to Urban Taco to enjoy their 1/2 price appetizers and beverages :)

The food at Urban Taco is all kinds of delicious and I seriously think eating there is worth the cost of airfare ;)

On Friday, Kate and I just sat poolside ALL day long. Rough life, I know. The pool at my sister and brother-in-law’s complex is pure bliss and doing anything else on our first day there would have been silly! Also, my sister is one of the best hostesses ever. Check out the sangria situation in the fridge that we enjoyed all weekend!

Once my sister and Ab got home from work, we snacked on a cheese plate while we figured out the plan for the night. My sister buys this merlot cheese and a rosemary cheese that are quite addicting. Must find it at home!

IMG_1901

We decided we had to show Kate the Fort Worth area so we headed the the Stock Yards so she could see some real cowboys!

IMG_1902

IMG_1903

IMG_1904

We enjoyed some live music and a copious amount of onion strings while we ate at a burger joint.

IMG_1905

IMG_1910

And, of course, made plenty of time to be weirdos :)

IMG_1909

Saturday was filled with shopping at the Galleria Mall and stumbling across one of the greatest inventions… I’ll post more about said invention in a separate post later this week ;)

IMG_1922

Post-shopping we went over to the Bishop Arts District which I absolutely adored. This is definitely my kind of neighborhood. Totally creative, local artists doing their thing :)

My very favorite store from the trip was {neighborhood}. FIRST of all, check out the lil’ puppy that roams the shop. Sheer delight!

IMG_9237

And SECOND, this wall. Need I say more? There aren’t enough words to describe how badly I want to own this :)

IMG_1928

{neighborhood} is an interior design shop that also sells cute and quirky products for the home. The entire back part of the store is dedicated to client consultations where you can work with designers to create a dreamy space. I actually wanted to just hang out in the store and crash on one of the couches, it was that comfy.

IMG_1929

Our next stop was Dude, Sweet Chocolate. The vibe of this shop was so on point. From the color scheme, to their packaging, and of course, their delicious chocolates.

IMG_9240

IMG_9242

Immediatley upon entering, the VERY friendly and hilarious salespeople asked if we wanted to try samples. I, of course, am no dumbo, so I said suuuure. I got the Albatross which was made with blue cheese and sea salt. Never in my life could I have imagined such a tasty piece of chocolate. This was extra creamy, thanks to the cheese!

IMG_9256

IMG_9257

Lucky for you you can shop online! So many great gift options.

IMG_9258

IMG_9259

After chocolate-tasting we strolled by {neighborhood} again and realized the storefront was calling for a mini photoshoot. So, we did just that.

IMG_9266

There are so many great photo opportunities in this part of Dallas that I couldn’t help snapping away. Postcard-like images.

On the way back to the car we stopped in M’antiques because if you know anything about me it should be that I love an antique shop, even if it is geared towards men, HA! Oh, and they offer free wine, whiskey, and soda. Sooo, there’s that.

IMG_1931

Vino in an antique shop. Texas things ;)

IMG_1933

After wandering around, we got dinner at Smoke, a handmade, homegrown, local food kind of restaurant. Spot on. This is the kind of food I pictured when I thought of Texas before. Finger lickin’, bbq sauce drippin’, deliciousness. Just thinking about this place makes my stomach rumble.

IMG_9272

The lighting was a bit low in the restaurant so I didn’t snap many photos. Who am I kidding, my fingers were sticky with bbq sauce and I didn’t want to fiddle with my camera ;) I ordered the dry rubbed pork spare ribs with mac and cheese and pickled green beans. Woah, Nelly.

IMG_9293

Ab ordered the same thing and we both had leftovers. Please check out what he wrote on his to-go box. We don’t mess around with leftovers in this family, HA!

IMG_1948

Because I checked-in on Foursquare (haaay!) we got a free dessert. Please note the size of this key lime pie. There were four of us at dinner and we couldn’t even finish the thing. And quite honestly, this was the best key lime pie I’ve ever had, and I know a thing about key lime pie! Also, disregard the peace sign photo bomb in the background :)

IMG_1936

After dinner we headed next door to Bar Belmont to check out the view of Dallas before we headed back to the house so Kate could get to the airport.

IMG_1939

Pretty city, you are.

Sunday, my sister and I were planning on going to their complex’s pool party but it started raining summertime-tropical-style, so instead we did errands and went grocery shopping. We decided for dinner that night we would go Italian in honor of The Real Housewives of New Jeresy. We were pumped to be able to watch an episode together, hahaha. It’s the little things.

IMG_1949

Monday was my last day so my sister took the day off from work and we had a delightful brunch at Bread Winner’s Cafe and Bakery in the Uptown area of Dallas.

IMG_1951

We ate in the covered courtyard which was just too pretty for words. It felt so southern and I loved it. Des ordered the Farmhouse Scramble which consisted of potatoes, jalepeno bacon (!!), onion, and cheddar cheese. OH, yum!

IMG_1968

IMG_1952

I judge every breakfast joint by their Eggs Benedict and Bread Winner’s passed with flying colors. One of the best I’ve ever had, actually. The jalepeno bacon could very well turn into some sort of addiction.

IMG_1969

IMG_1970

We spent the rest of Monday afternoon walking around the Knox Henderson area of the city, which is another spot I loved. My favorite thing about Texas is that I feel fully confident rocking big hair. No one even looks twice and it’s fabulous.

IMG_1984

We went to a ton of furniture stores, including Weir’s Furniture which serves 25 cent boxes of popcorn. You know I devoured that in a heartbeat.

IMG_1986

For my final dinner in Dallas, for this trip, we went to Sfuzzif for their Monday night pizza deal. Yup, half off pizzas. A nice dinner for three under $20 is something that’s pretty much unheard of in Boston so I totally eat this all up when I visit Texas! :)

IMG_1987

A frozen blueberry mojito (!!!!) and half sausage/half seasonal veggie pizza. Mmm, mmm, mmm!

IMG_1988

I took the redeye back to Boston early Tuesday morning then jumped right back into reality and had to be at work at 10am. Woooof. Long day. Slash I have no clue what day it even is. Or what time it is. All I know is that I should go to bed and set an alarm clock so I wake up. And start planning my next trip to Dallas ;)

Playing Catch up

Oh, hello.

I’m back. And yes, I’m still blogging. Yes, I’m still alive. Yes, I’ve missed you, too. All answers to questions I’ve been asked over the last several weeks. I did not die or fall of the face of the Earth.

I was talking to a friend the other day about how I felt guilty about not blogging for so long. But I’m also torn because as much as I love blogging, at the same time, it’s nice to go out to dinner with someone and not snap photos of every morsel of food. It’s nice to not write blog posts in my head when I should be listening to the person sitting across the table from me. It’s nice to whip up a quick dinner and not have it take three times as long because I’m photographing every step. It’s nice to just be present. After I was done with my rant, my friend simply said, “Sounds like you just needed a break”. Which was true. Regardless of how much you love doing something, sometimes, you just need a break to find the time to discover other things you love and to just sort things out in your head.

So, what have I been up to?

I’ve spent more time at the gym, which is something I haven’t done in a while. I just completed a 6-week suspension training program called TRX. Feeling strong is a wonderful thing! I always found reasons not to commit to things like this because I had to get home and blog or cook dinner while it was still light out, so it was nice to actually have some time to take care of myself and get back into a routine at the gym.

I also took a trip down to Texas. My sister and brother-in-law moved to the Dallas area, so I visited them over Easter weekend. I actually purchased my plane ticket before they even bought theirs!

IMG_8045

AREN’T THEY SO CUTE?!

IMG_8048

IMG_8046_1.jpg

[No clue why I'm standing like a body builder.]

It’s kind of crummy not having them live in the same state anymore, but it makes me happy knowing I can visit a lot and when I need a change of scenery I can hop on a flight down to visit them. This will come in handy in the winter.

Heck, I even have my own room:

Let it be known that I did not have a single bad meal while in Dallas. This city knows how to cook! One of my invitation clients travels to Dallas for work a lot so she recommended we try Screen Door, which is a modern southern restaurant. It blew my mind.

My first night there, we went to Urban Taco which is a modern Mexican kitchen. We went on a Thursday evening and they were having 1/2 off drinks and appetizers and also had a live band outside on the patio. Sooo, we ate and drank a lot. Obviously. The restaurant also had complimentary valet parking, which to most people might not sound like a big deal at all, but when you add up how expensive it is to park in Boston, you could probably put two children and your dog through private school.

IMG_8007

Over Easter weekend, we wandered around the Fort Worth Stock Yards.

IMG_8071

And now I want a pair of custom boots from M.L. Leddys. And I probably need a custom saddle to match, although I can’t even remember the last time I rode a horse ;) These boots are stunnING. They take 10-12 months to make which I kind of love. A complete labor of love.

My sister made a delicious Easter dinner in her new kitchen!

IMG_8105

The rest of the trip was spent walking the lake Des and Ab live on, catching up, goofing around, and driving all around town with my siblings getting a feel for their new home. I loved it there and can’t wait for my next trip!

Some other things I’ve been up to?

Spending quality time with my co-workers! We had a cupcake decorating night and made some adoooorable lil’ guys!

[All of ours together!]

My friend Missy is dating a guy who has adorable daughter’s so I’ve spent some time with them, too! One of them made me this drawing and I CAN’T STOP LOOKING AT IT. How stinkin’ cute are kids!?

201204261145.jpg

I also joined a CSA through Maya Papaya! I’m THRILLED to know every week this season, I’ll receive some beautiful bounty from Vermont. I’m splitting the share with a co-worker, just because we’re both single and don’t want to be wasteful. We did the math and it comes out to about $6/week worth of produce. So pumped to see what we get each week :) The nice folks at Maya Papaya dropped off some farm fresh eggs for us recently, too. Delicious.

I’ve also been glued to my computer and craft table designing invitations, which is just plain neat. Here’s a peek at Sues and Chris’s wedding invitation:

And Sues’ shower invitation. I created a custom painting in her wedding colors and incorporated the culinary theme into the invite. ‘Twas a fun one to work on.

Last Thursday I went to one of my most favorite events of the year, Taste of the Nation. Our very dear blog-friend-turned-real-life-friend, Susan, does PR for the event and so kindly invites us every year. It’s a wonderful cause, to raise awareness to stop childhood hunger.

Besides spending the night mingling with some of Boston’s greatest chefs, I got to spend quality time with some of the absolute best people I know, Julie and Becca, who we met many moons ago through blogging. Which brings me back to the point I initially made. Sometimes you just need a break from what you love to realize how much you miss it when its gone.

I’m back :) Woop!

If you’re a blogger (or not), have you ever just needed to take a break to focus on other things in life? Do you feel guilty?
