Blueberry Pie Milkshake

Pie in a jar is a thing. I know. But I prefer milkshakes in jars. Or in just plain old glasses. Or straight out of the blender and into my mouth. Not that I’d ever be a pig like that. At least not when anyone is home to see me. (which means you’ll never really know). Basically, what I’m trying to say is pie in jars is cool and all, but milkshakes in jars are better. So, pie milkshakes in jars are the ultimate. I clearly rocked my college logic class and even moved on to become a logic TA (wow, that sounds a lot nerdier when you actually write it down), but I don’t think you have to be a logic-tician to figure out that something cool and something way cooler make something that’s cool on a whole new level. Like blueberry milkshakes.
I never can decide if I like apple or blueberry pie the best. I think it probably depends on the season and right now it’s just about beautiful, glorious blueberry season. As someone who can eat blueberries by the bushel, I’m very happy about this change in the seasons. And you knew it wouldn’t take long for me to break out my blender for a milkshake since I basically never put it away my milkshake making is so frequent. In case you’re worried (which I’m sure you’re not), I’ve already begun on the summer ice cream-making fun, too. This is going to be the year of frozen treats. I can feel it. And taste it. It’s going to be a good one.

Blueberry Pie Milkshake (makes 2):

  • 1 1/2 C blueberries
  • 1/8 C powdered sugar
  • 1/8 C water
  • 3 C vanilla ice cream
  • 5 graham crackers

First you’ll want to make a lovely little blueberry puree. Or syrup. Or something that resembles blueberry pie filling. And is delicious. All you have to do is combine the blueberries, powdered sugar, and water in a small saucepan over medium high heat.

Wait patiently while the mixture comes to a boil.

And then lower the heat and let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring from time to time. It will thicken up and the blueberries will start to burst and get all delicious-looking.

Then comes the tough part: letting it cool. I recommend putting the blueberry syrup in a bowl and sticking it in the fridge.

When it’s cooled to an acceptable temperature (i.e. not hot to the touch anymore), you can get blending. Put the blueberry mixture along with 3 cups of ice cream and 4 graham crackers in a blender. Shout-out to my Vitamix. I should also mention that you could TOTALLY make your own ice cream for this milkshake. But me? I wanted this one ASAP and didn’t have time to wait for that.

And blend until well-combined. And a beautiful color. Who says blue/purple foods aren’t natural?

Pour into a glass. Or a jar. I know the whole mason jar thing is such an overdone trend, but I’m pretty sure I won’t ever stop. Whenever I’m making a drink and have to get a glass out, I can’t resist the mason jar. They just look good. And who cares if everyone else is doing it, anyway? Do what you love.

Oh, I forgot to mention that you should give your mason car (or glass. or blender) a graham cracker rim with that leftover graham cracker. I used a little of the blueberry syrup to get my graham cracker crumbs to stick.

Do you like how I said I forgot to tell you something and instead of just going and editing my directions, I added it in exactly when and where I remembered it? I think that accurately describes how incredibly tired I am right now. It’s been a rough one. And we’re not even halfway through.

Right now, I’m trying my very best not to get sick. I’m knocking on wood as I type this (really), but I haven’t been sick since last May. A few weeks more and it will be an entire a year. I know I just totally jinxed myself, especially since I can feel my immune system declining (that’s a thing. I can really feel it); but I’m going to fight it with all I’ve got.

And blueberries are packed with antioxidants.

Soooo. Come on milkshake, don’t let me down. I might just eat the leftover blueberries by the handful now. Or find a way to inject them into my immune system. I’d probably leave the ice cream out… Though the extra calcium couldn’t hurt.

This was way easier and faster to make them blueberry pie. And if you like your blueberry pie a la mode, this is basically that but in a mason jar. With no chewing involved.

Not that I’m so lazy I wouldn’t chew a piece of pie. You know what I mean. Milkshakes are just always better. And even if I do end up getting sick, I’m pretty sure a purple milkshake would help make me feel much better!

Cadbury Egg Milkshake

Last week was a Beet Smoothie. Today is a Cadbury Egg Milkshake. Talk about contrast. Basically, you can have a liquid diet and get all of your food groups in. If you consider ice cream, chocolate, caramel, and Easter candy a food group. Which you should. At least at this time of year. Easter is early this year (doesn’t it feel like we say that every year, though??), which means less time for Easter candy. Though I suppose that’s not even true considering Easter candy was on the shelves before Valentine’s Day this year. In any event, this weekend is the first weekend I’ve actually purchased Easter candy this season. I honestly think I OD’ed a bit on it in years past and just wasn’t craving those Cadbury Mini Eggs like I usually do.

Until this milkshake. Cadbury Mini Eggs in vanilla ice cream with an actual Cadbury Creme Egg thrown in for good measure is just meant to be. And now I’m sad Easter is just a short week away and I’ve only just rediscovered my love for Easter candy. So, how fast can I get to CVS next Monday morning to catch the 50% off before it all sells out? Seriously though, it’s probably a good thing I’m late to the Easter candy game this year. For both me and you.

Cadbury Egg Milkshake (makes 2):

  • 20 wrapped caramel
  • 1 T half and half
  • 1/4 C chocolate sauce (homemade version here)
  • 3 C vanilla ice cream
  • 3/4 C milk (I used Silk Vanilla Soy Milk)
  • 1 C Cadbury Mini Eggs
  • 2 Cadbury Creme Eggs

You could totally buy caramel sauce… Or you could even make it from scratch. I just melted caramels with 1 T half and half over medium heat and stirred until smooth. I took off the burner to cool, stirring every now and then. Also, I realize there’s not actually caramel in a Cadbury Egg, but how do you recreate the yellow yolk? You can’t. And this milkshake felt like it was missing a dimension with just chocolate. It needed something else to round it out. And obviously more sugar.

In a blender, combine ice cream, 3/4 C milk, and Cadbury Mini Eggs. I used Silk light vanilla soy milk because it’s what I always have in my fridge, but you could totally use skim milk, whole milk, whatever you want!

Blend until smooth.

Pour into a glass and stir in chocolate sauce and caramel sauce. And then obviously top with a Cadbury Creme Egg for garnish. Yes, for garnish. Shush. This holiday happens once a year and I’ll use Cadbury Creme Eggs for garnish if I want to.

This milkshake made me fall in love with Cadbury Mini Eggs again. Thank goodness. Actually I’m not really sure if that’s a good or a bad thing. It could be argued either way.

I guess everyone should just count themselves lucky that I didn’t top this with Peeps syrup, like I did the Cadbury Egg Ice Cream I made last year. Maybe I actually have boundaries? Really, that Peeps syrup caused a lot of controversy last year. People have really, really strong feelings about Peeps. Which kind of baffles me, considering they’re just marshmallows formed into cute animal shapes and covered in pastel sugar. Are they really that offensive? Maybe don’t answer that.

Most people seem to love Cadbury Eggs, though. Especially the mini ones. Though it’s hard to deny the awesomeness of the Creme eggs if you ask me. They really are the original Cadbury Egg goodness. Isn’t it kind of strange that Cadbury Chocolate hasn’t gained tons of popularity in the U.S., but when it comes to Easter candy, it’s the golden standard?

If the Easter Bunny left milkshakes, he’d totally be leaving this one. And, I mean, why doesn’t he? A basket full of milkshakes? Make it happen, Bunny.
